We’ve published some ‘frequently asked questions’ to provide more detail on the eight initiatives being considered by the Energy Competition Task Force.

These FAQs are based on key questions put to the Task Force by market participants during two online Q&A forums held in November.

We will update the FAQs as our work progresses. If you have a question you’d like us to add, feel free to contact us at taskforce@ea.govt.nz.

Jointly established with the Commerce Commission, the Task Force is considering short- to medium-term initiatives to:

  • encourage more and faster investment in new electricity generation
  • boost competition
  • enable consumers to better manage their own electricity use and costs
  • put downward pressure on prices.

The Task Force expects decisions to be made on all eight initiatives by mid-2025. Please see the ‘work programme’ on the Energy Competition Task Force webpage for the latest timeline.
