Participation of new generating technologies in the wholesale market
How to enable participation of new generating technologies in the wholesale electricity market
Overview
The Market Development Advisory Group (MDAG) put forward their recommendations to the Electricity Authority Board on how to enable participation of new generating technologies in the wholesale electricity market.
The Board supports MDAG’s key recommendations. It confirmed that a strategy for new generating technologies will need to be integrated with other work, both on the wholesale market and on unlocking the benefits of new technologies in other parts of the sector eg, our open networks project.

Paper —MDAG's recommendations paper on enabling new generation in the wholesale market
Project background
The Electricity Authority sought independent advice from MDAG on how to ensure the Electricity Industry Participation Code:
- enables new generating technologies to participate in the wholesale electricity market without inefficient barriers; and
- signals each generating technology’s costs and benefits in relation to promoting electricity reliability.
We would like to help remove barriers to new and existing generating technologies in order to improve supply side competition, reliability and the operational efficiency of the electricity industry.
