Switch power companies
There are lots of power companies to choose from in New Zealand who regularly have new plans and can have special offers for new customers. It's worth shopping around to see if you can save money.
How do I switch power companies?
It’s quick and easy to search for a better power deal. Make sure you're on the right plan for your needs.
You can use Powerswitch. It’s a free, independent energy price-comparison service, part-funded by the Electricity Authority.
On Powerswitch, you can view and compare different power deals and choose the retailer and plan that best suits your needs. Once you've chosen a power company and plan, you can select to switch. Your new power company will then arrange the transfer for you. On average, it takes just 3-4 days for the switch to take place.
Consider your options
If you're thinking of switching, consider your options and make sure you:
- Check your contract - If you are on a fixed term contract, there may be a break fee to switch before the fixed term ends so check your terms and conditions. If there's a break fee, talk to your power company about how that fee applies and if they can offer you a better deal.
- Check your meter - You may need a smart meter to switch to a new plan or power company. For example, time of use plans with a ‘free hour of power’ or reduced rates during the night need half-hourly data from smart meters. You can use Your meter to find out if you have a smart meter. If you don't have one, the power company may be able to install one for you, but there may be a cost.
